METS: Willies Deal Set to Avoid Embarassment

Michael Kay mentions on a January 24th that the Mets were originally offering under $1 million per year in his contract. They were, in effect, spitting in his face with such an embarrassing number. When the Wallace article came out, the Mets quickly rushed to avoid embarrassment and offered him a better contract. We have seen the true colors of the Wilpons. The Mets organization has vastly overpaid on its recent players but Randolf was a key player in getting the Mets to the playoffs. The Mets organization is making a lot more money now with SNY and its new ballpark coming soon and this original offer by the Mets is a shame. No amount, not even the new, slightly better offer, can make up for this. Torre was rewarded in 96 for his job well done with an increased salary, so every day that Willie's contract lingered it was becoming more and more an embarrassing toward the organization. This is why they rushed to a new contract for Willie, not because they cared or appreciated his efforts. SHAME SHAME SHAME!
